In the past 50 years, Steppenwolf has become the nation’s premier ensemble theatre. The three performance spaces provide exciting artistic opportunities which remain rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theatre, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work.
During the 2021 renovation of the Steppenwolf Downstairs Theater Steeldeck® installed trap and apron platforms with flexible support structures.
In the newest space, Steeldeck® installed a trap and platform system with adjustable, flexible support structures to create an intimate 400-seat Ensemble Theater which is only six rows deep and places no audience member more than 20 feet from stage. The Ensemble Theater replaces the Upstairs Theater and will be the only in-the-round theater of its kind found in Chicago.
“The Steeldeck® team were great collaborators on our projects. They listened carefully to how we use our spaces and how our teams work in the design process to ensure their solutions not only met our requests, but also offered improvements above what we had hoped to achieve. This give-and-take continued into the smooth install and training process where it was clear they didn’t just want to get it done, but wanted to make sure it was done well and would function great for us in the long term .”
